Garrett Fulmer

The versatility of art is inherent to its very nature, and is in fact one of its greatest strengths. Indeed, the very definition of what constitutes art is a highly contested subject. Ranging from the grotesque to the ludicrous, it represents multi-faceted concepts in an immediate visual fashion, accessing the entire gamut of emotional response, from joy to sorrow.

The influence of such duality is present throughout much my work, both technically and conceptually. The style used in this show involves the coupling of traditional painting mediums with modern viewpoints. I tend to use muted realistic colors coupled with brig

areas for emphasis for a representational painting style that allows for emotional expression, but maintains a foothold in reality and relativity.

For the purpose of initiating a dialogue between viewer and art, I employ strange or unnerving imagery to capture their attention and elicit a reaction of intrigue and repulsion. Simultaneously, I try to temper these rougher elements of my work with a sense of humor in order to make unpalatable subjects easier to process. I feel that therein lies one of art’s most powerful aspects: its ability to manipulate the emotions of its viewer, to spark rumination and discourse on ideas and perspectives beyond those which normally occupy our thoughts.

When people look at art, their feelings toward it develop on a subconscious level. We do not choose which art strikes a chord and connects with us, and which repels and disgusts us. For this reason I often include cultural references for their distinction and ability to function as a common ground on which to connect with viewers. Building upon these preexisting connotations and associations is my personal way of relating to the subjects which I depict, and adding my own vision to their influence.

So dear viewer, though you may initially find some of my work discomforting, I implore you to look beyond its shock value to analyze the response it brings forth. It may only be paint upon a surface, art affects us in ways beyond its two dimensional form. It is a search for silver linings in the clouds which obscure our thoughts, a recording of the juxtapositions of humor and solemnity which influence our viewpoints. Through my work I seek to give people an opportunity to step outside themselves and look at a situation from a perspective where it is safe to laugh at the absurdity and chaos of life, and lighten the load of its burdens.
