Art and Tell

I’ve always been interested in the interaction that takes place between people in everyday life. I’ve tried to place myself in an abundance of social situations and be as involved with the community as I can be. Because of this, my work has mostly been influenced by the reflection of the human self and human interaction. I work mainly in 3D materials with my choice of mediums being metal, wood, and found objects. My past works have mostly involved assemblages of various materials because I’m constantly trying to explore different mediums to see how I react to them.

In this series, I’ve been inspired by thinking on how childhood memories have affected the adult personality. Each piece features an action or object that most people will have some memory of from their own childhood, like bubbles or rubber ducks. These childhood concepts are then modified to create a more mature piece. Whether that maturity comes from its sophisticated form, or from its content, depends on the piece. For example, “Fossilized” represents a simple scribble elegantly replicated in an abstract bronze form.

An added layer to these works is each piece will also have an interaction aspect between the artworks and the viewer. Though “Fossilized” is elegant in its simple state, it is then elevated to a new level by having the viewers draw their own scribbles carelessly on the mounted board, just like when they were children. I’m interested in the various reactions of viewers to the pieces. Therefore, the artworks will reflect a childhood image brought to maturity, while the mature viewer will be brought back to a level of childlikeness through interaction with the pieces.
